My neighbor’s tree is hanging over/damaging my property. What can I (you) do about it?

Generally, tree limbs hanging over onto your property may be trimmed up to the property line. Disputes about trees that are located directly on the property line are a civil matter between property owners.

What does Right-of-Way mean?

The right to cross land is known as ‘right of way’. This right can be on any land. If the right is granted to everyone, it is a ‘public right of way’. The land is owned, or interest therein acquired, by the City and dedicated for travel purposes and utility placement. In most locations within the City, the property between the sidewalk and the street is owned by the City of Mount Carmel.

What services are included with my garbage pickup?

Republic Services Provides garbage pickup for residential users inside the corporate city limits. The amount of $19.00 is added to your water sewer bill for the service. 

The service is provided through a contract between the City of Mount Carmel and Republic Services. If you are experiencing a problem or are wanting a second receptacle please contact Republic Services by calling (618) 936-9209

When does the City Sweep Streets?

The City of Mount Carmel’s sweeping schedule is seasonal. Dates and times may vary depending on equipment availability, inclement weather, and unforeseen staff disruptions, such as emergency repair responses.

Sweeping operation concentrates on residential streets when they are typically less congested with parked cars. Neighborhoods are usually swept from 8 a.m. to ?. The sweeping operation concentrates on the busier arterial and collector streets when those streets are less busy normally between 5 a.m. to 7  a.m.

When does the City's Fall Leaf Program run?

The City of Mount Carmel’s annual leaf collection program provides residents with an alternate way to dispose of their leaves. Residents who do not mulch or bag their leaves may simply rake leaves to the curb.

Beginning the week of November 1st and continuing through January 1st. 

Routes will be as follows:

  • subdivisions on North Cherry Street and head North towards the Park Road area.
  • We will then head towards Lambert Drive and start on Oak Street.
  • From there we will do the North and South roads from Oak to Market.
  • Then we will do the West and East roads from 1st to the Middle School.
  • From there we will start on Market and head towards Peach Street going North and South
  • then do West and East Streets from 1st to 13th.

Why is my street not plowed yet?

During Snow Removal the streets are plowed in a set order to maximize efficiency, expediency and resources. The main roads are treated and plowed first with the collectors second and the neighborhoods third.

Will the Street department cut down my tree?

If the tree/bush is obstructing the city's right-of-way or hindering traffic visibility the Street Department will trim or remove the tree/bush.

If the tree is on the City's right-of-way and is dead and or a hazard the Street Department will trim or remove the tree/bush.

Contact the Street Department at 618-262-2358 or report the concern on-line. You will need to provide the address and any cross streets. The street department does not provide maintenance to trees on private property.

Will the Street department pickup yard waste, limbs?

Yes The City of Mount Carmel will collect yard waste. Pickup is on your normal trash day. This service is funded by the charge paid for garbage collection for customers that are within the corporate city limits only.
